Friends you Meet Along the Way

Updated: Feb 5, 2020

Facebook: We hope you enjoy looking back on your memories on Facebook, from the most recent memories to those long ago.

Me: No, no I don't enjoy it. Make it stop!

There is nothing I dread more than going on Facebook and be bombarded with 'here are your memories from 10 years ago' and there is a picture of me with glazed eyes, holding a glass and trying hard to not let my double chin show. Seriously though Facebook needs to chill, some of us don't want to be reminded of the past (our past selves). I've made much progress (the double chin is still there my eyes are clearer though).

I don't like seeing post from 2009 in first year looking like I needed a stylist, a life coach and a Structures 101 tutor. It was rough and I looked it!

A lot can be said about my posts this past decade on Facebook but it's not all depressing and embarrassing, some memories bring me joy (albeit only a handful). this past decade on Facebook but it's not all depressing and embarrassing, some memories bring me joy (albeit only a handful).

For instance exactly a year ago I was in Zanzibar living my best life with friends I made on a Contiki tour 4 years prior. We've managed to keep the connection going which is a feat. This is our Contiki group in Thailand:

It was lovely to see some of our pictures and a wave of emotion took over me because it's rare to find such connections and also be privy to their best moments; they got engaged in Zanzibar and I (unknowingly) organised a mini ceremony on a sand bank with those on tour with us ululating, singing and dancing. How amazing is that? You connect with souls and they become your tribe.

This post started off as a rant towards Facebook but ended up with me appreciating it because some memories are precious; they remind us of the days when souls connected and friendships were formed. It reminds of of how far we've come, how well we've done. We made it guys! We are still here able to reminisce. You know what they say 'a picture says a thousand words' then Facebook is nothing but a library. Some books are masterpieces and others mediocre.

I'll have to blog about my travel adventures soon; especially with these two! Zanzibar, Thailand and Cape Town deserve a post.

So thank you Facebook for relentlessly reminding me of how far I've come and those that have stuck with me through this journey.
